Shongweni Farmers Market - The Famous "Red Rooster" Market

Every Sunday we try write something new about Durban and South Africa or a recent place that has captured our hearts. This week we want to write a bit about a very special farmers market located in the outer-west of Durban. Just to correct some of us out there ( Less travelled South Africans 🙈)  this is not a flea market ( because this creates a bad taste in my mouth of cheap & nasty dishtowels & petrol smelling black plastic packets) at all but rather a craft & artisanal market that celebrates local small businesses. The Shongweni Farmers Market is very impressive with more than 150 stalls and you can find anything from local cheeses , farm fresh seasonal strawberries and of course "seamartist" heritage shirts all created in Durban & surrounding areas. A must visit place especially for a great artisanal breakfast or a craft beer at the Red Rooster café.

The Shongweni Farmers Market is a family friendly market located up country (#upperhighwaykzn) . There is just so much to do and see it can feel like a mini roadtrip with breathtaking views even before getting to your final destination. The market itself is more than 25 years old and according to 1000hillstourism blog it was started by Christine and the Standeaven family in 1998 and has been growing from strength to strength ever since. We at "seamartist" are so proud to be part of such a fantastic market. In our opinion it is one of the best places to spend your Saturday morning in, in the entire South Africa. Durban here has a 1001 brownie points for being home to the Shongweni Farmers Market. #Capetown & #joburg please don't be jealous hahaha ☺️
